Reality TV and unscripted production

Click Play Films produces reality and unscripted content to a broadcast standard, from sizzle reels and pilot presentations through to full series, with a producer accountable on every project.

The studio

Unscripted is a casting and story problem before it is a camera problem

Broadcast craft. Real people. One accountable team.

Reality and unscripted work is won or lost long before a camera is switched on. The format has to hold up over episodes rather than minutes, the cast has to be people an audience will follow, and the release paperwork has to be watertight because you cannot re-shoot a real moment. We have produced unscripted for networks and brands, and the discipline is the same either way: find the story that is genuinely there, then build a production around capturing it rather than staging it.

The other reality of this business is that budgets are episodic. Cost per episode falls sharply with volume, because casting, crew, kit and post workflow are set up once and reused. That is why we would rather talk about a season than a one-off, and why a sizzle reel that actually sells the format is usually the highest-leverage thing a project can spend money on first.

If your project is a factual or journalistic film rather than a format, that is a different craft and it lives on our documentary video production page.

What we produce

Reality and unscripted services

01

Sizzle Reels and Pilots

The format presentation that sells the show. Cut to prove the cast, the stakes and the look in under five minutes.

02

Documentary

Factual and artist-led filmmaking, where the story is reported rather than formatted.

03

Live and Event Capture

Multi-camera coverage of competitions, finales and live formats, cut fast enough to matter.

04

Branded Unscripted

Formats built for a brand rather than a network, where the show is the marketing.

05

Vertical and Short-Form Series

Episodic content built for phone-first platforms, shot and cut vertical from the start.

06

Casting and Real-People Story

Finding, vetting and releasing contributors who can carry an episode.

Producing unscripted

What the work actually requires

The constraints in unscripted are legal, logistical and human rather than technical. The camera package is the easy part.

01

Casting Is the Production

A format lives or dies on who is in it. Casting starts early, runs in parallel with development, and needs enough volume to be selective rather than grateful.

02

Releases and Clearances

Every contributor, location, logo and track needs paperwork before it is shot, not after. A missing release can remove a scene you cannot recreate.

03

Shoot Ratios Are Brutal

Unscripted routinely shoots dozens of hours for one cut hour. Post is where the budget actually goes, so logging, transcription and edit workflow are planned before the first shoot day.

04

Duty of Care Is Not Optional

Working with real people carries real responsibility: informed consent, welfare during and after production, and a clear line about what will and will not be shown.

05

Continuity Without a Script

Story producers track threads across episodes so the season holds together. That role is the difference between a series and a pile of footage.

06

Format Before Finance

Commissioners and brands buy a format, not a mood. The bible, the episode grid and the sizzle come before the production budget is meaningful.

Pricing

What reality and unscripted production costs

Most production companies will not put numbers on a page. Here are ours.

Unscripted is priced by shoot days, crew size and post volume rather than by finished minute. Cost per episode drops substantially across a season, because casting, crew and edit workflow are built once and reused.

$0$15k$30k$45k$60k$75k+
Single episode unscripted pilot$10,000 – $30,000
Three-episode pilot$30,000 – $60,000
Full unscripted series, 6 to 10 episodes$50,000 and up

Post moves this chart more than the shoot does: unscripted shoot ratios mean logging and edit time, not camera days, drive the number.

01

$10,000 to $30,000

Single episode unscripted pilot. One episode produced end to end: development, casting, shoot, story producing and full post, built to stand on its own in front of a buyer.

02

$30,000 to $60,000

Three-episode pilot. Three episodes produced together, which is what most buyers want to see before committing to a season. Casting, crew and post workflow are set up once and reused across all three.

03

$50,000 and up

Full unscripted series, 6 to 10 episodes. A complete season. Cost per episode falls substantially at this volume because the production is built once and runs across the whole order.

Why Click Play

A production partner, not just a camera crew

We produce to a broadcast standard, staff unscripted with story producers rather than only shooters, and put one producer on your project who is accountable from development through delivery. We are equally comfortable making a format for a network and making one for a brand that wants to own its own show.

FAQ

Reality and unscripted production questions

How much does reality TV production cost?

A single episode unscripted pilot typically runs $10,000 to $30,000. A three-episode pilot, which is what most buyers want to see, runs $30,000 to $60,000. A full series of six to ten episodes starts around $50,000, and cost per episode falls substantially at that volume. Paid contributors, music licensing and specialist equipment are quoted separately and itemized up front.

What is a sizzle reel and do I need one?

A sizzle reel is a short cut that sells a format: the cast, the stakes, the tone and the look, usually in under five minutes. If you are taking an idea to a network, a streamer or a brand, it is almost always the first thing to make, because it is what people actually buy from. We produce these as a standalone service.

Do you develop formats or only produce them?

Both. We can take an idea through development into a format bible and episode grid, or we can produce a format that has already been commissioned. If you are arriving with a fully formed show, we slot in as the production company; if you are arriving with a person and a premise, development is where we start.

How do you cast for unscripted?

Casting runs in parallel with development rather than after it. We source through open calls, targeted outreach and specialist casting partners, screen on camera, and check that a contributor can carry a scene and wants to. Volume matters, because the point is to be selective.

Who handles releases and clearances?

We do. Every contributor, location, logo and music cue is cleared before it is shot, because unscripted moments cannot be recreated if paperwork is missing. Minors, medical settings and workplaces each carry additional requirements and we plan those in rather than discovering them.

What is the difference between reality and documentary?

Reality and unscripted work is built around a format, a repeatable structure that generates story across episodes. Documentary is reported: the story exists and the filmmaking finds it. The crews overlap, the craft does not. Our factual and artist-led work sits on the documentary video production page.

Can you produce vertical or short-form series?

Yes, and we shoot them vertical from the start rather than cropping a landscape cut down. Phone-first episodic content has different pacing, different coverage and different episode lengths, and it fails when it is treated as an afterthought in post.

How long does a series take to produce?

A sizzle reel is typically two to four weeks. A single episode runs four to eight weeks depending on casting and shoot volume. A season is scheduled around casting availability and delivery dates, and we build the schedule backwards from the date you need to deliver.

Do you work with brands as well as networks?

Yes, and branded unscripted is a growing part of the work. A brand-owned format gives you something audiences choose to watch rather than something they skip, and it is yours rather than rented media. The production discipline is identical; the approvals process is usually faster.

Can you shoot in multiple cities?

Yes. With offices in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Boston, Fort Lauderdale and Houston, and coverage in 48 markets, a format that travels stays one production team with consistent direction rather than a different local vendor in every location.

Who owns the footage?

You do. You receive the finished episodes and, on request, the camera originals and the logged assemblies. We archive projects so a later season can reuse material rather than re-shooting it.
